6.2 Sightings
* April, 2006 *
Sighting #1:
The Ladies Circle was hard at work
gathering donations of Easter Basket goodies from all of YOU, our HCC
Family. Then a group led by Rachel Fields created 41 beautiful
baskets for Auction. Her helpers were Teri Wilson, Joni Bliffen, Lisa Dunn, Linda Duke, Tricia LeFevre, and Kayley Wilson.
A BIG thank you to our bid winners: Velvet Hopkins, Trisha LeFevre, Hannah Bailey, Michelle Woosley,
Korinne Hemm, Hailey
Watts, Mike Mollineaux, Beth Berry, Terrance
Huff, Michael Davidson, Angie Harris, Yvonne Fonnegra,
Rachel Fields, Heather Biard, Abigail Csikos, Darla Dahnke, Roy
Pettis, Carla Jungen, Michelle Roberts, and
Rhonda Hall. Thanks to our HCC Family, in community with the Ladies Circle,
$606.75 was raised for the SD Youth Mission Trip.
Again our HCC Family is indeed a community
that is “better together”. Together, the rummage sale was a HUGE success.
Our SD Youth Mission Team realizes how blessed we are to have such a
wonderful church family. From the literally car loads of donations, to
helping truck the leftovers to the Neighborhood Store (another community
charity we support), to shopping during the sale, YOU, our HCC Family
helped us raise $1,031. And then we had a rummage sale customer come
worship with us on Sunday. Praise God
for his many blessings.
Sighting #2:
Last week, our very own, Kevin
Naderi was recognized as the “Volunteer of
the Year” by the Madison
County Volunteer
Center in the Youth
category. Three other categories,
Individual, Group and Family were also awarded.
Kevin’s supervisor at United
Cerebral Palsy nominated him.
Because he won, UCP will receive a $1000.00 grant from The
Huntsville Times. This is the first UCP winner from nominees over the past
6 years. Kevin’s nomination included
the fact that Kevin has a sibling with cerebral palsy and how that played a
role in his volunteering, so Emily had a part in this too. The family
called Emily to tell her the good news and she told Kevin how proud she was
of him.
Kevin began volunteering last
June, one day a week at United Cerebral Palsy. When school started he cut
back to one afternoon a week then, as his school activities increased, he
went to every other Thursday afternoon.
UCP is an organization that
provides physical, occupational, and speech therapy to the disabled
population at low or no cost. Kevin helps out in anyway that he can. He has
scrubbed down playground equipment, shredded documents, served as a helper
to the therapists doing things like throwing a ball with the client or
blowing bubbles to occupy the child while the therapist works.
After each client, all the toys
and the mat on which they lie must be disinfected. Kevin does this,
too. He has organized their huge toy
storage closet, made copies, cut out many shapes for use in occupational
therapy and in art camp, as well as laminating materials.
Kevin has also built small
support seats that help the little ones sit up while the therapist works
with them. He has done some record keeping on the computer and, lately, he
has been scanning storybooks into a computer to be used with a computer
program that allows very disabled people to read books using a head switch
or the like to "turn the page" on the computer screen.
UCP has awarded Kevin their
"Youth Leadership Award" during the 2005 Christmas awards program. In addition, UCP has recently nominated
him for the Partners for Charity Awards and Recognition Program.
Kevin’s parents, Melinda and
Mahmoud are very proud of him for the work
that he has done and especially because the staff at UCP tells them they
love to have him because he always has a smile on his face no matter what
task he is given.
Your HCC Family is also
very proud of you (Kevin), too, and we are blessed by your presence.
