2006 Youth Missions Trip to South Dakota
The Missions Ministry Team lead the Youth (junior and
senior high, 7-12th grades) on a mission trip to South Dakota on June
17-25, 2006. They ministered to a
Lakota (Sioux) tribe on Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. Life on Pine Ridge Reservation is full of
hard times and struggles.
Unemployment rates are between 85 and 95% because no technology or
commercial infrastructure exists.
The median income on the Pine Ridge Reservation is about $2,600.00
per year ($7.38 a day).
Because of their hard history, trust is a major problem
with the Indian people. Care must be taken when talking to them. Our team
was the first for the Batesland area. We must remember we were there to do
God’s work and share the love of Jesus Christ through meeting the Lakota
Indian’s physical and spiritual needs.
(You’d never guess this line of Indians “connects” to Julie Muytoy’s
family tree, thus the Muytoys’ leadership is key.)
We helped this church that was in desperate need of repair
and gave it a fresh and appealing look for those in search of a safe place
to come and find out about Jesus. We also provided a VBS for their
community.
