The first services
of Huntsville
Christian Church were held on November 24, 1963. A small nucleus of 39 people chose to
continue the work. By the spring of
1966, they had constructed a church building at 3815 Oakwood Avenue. The church worshipped there for 30
years. Six ministers served the
congregation during this period:
Charles Green, Phil McPherson, Bob James, Leigh Hargrave, Dan Asche,
and Stuart Ward.
The congregation eventually
outgrew the Oakwood property, and plans for a new building were developed
during 1993. The Oakwood property
was sold to a Korean Presbyterian Church in the spring of 1994. The congregation was dealt an unexpected
turn of events when the property that had been selected for the new
building was deemed unsuitable for construction, however.
The congregation met in
temporary facilities for approximately four years in the Huntsville
Marriott, the Tom
Bevill Center,
the old Redstone Federal Credit Union, and Market Square Mall while a
suitable site was selected and the new building was built. We call this our “Wilderness
Experience.” We thank God for
leading us through it.
The church is now located on
approximately 18 acres on Indian
Creek Road.
The first services were held here in July 1998. The congregation has grown to
approximately 350 members, requiring a major addition in late 2002. James Bliffen replaced Stuart Ward as the
minister in 1999 and continues to serve.
